Famous author Stephen King spoke with USA Weekend’s Lorrie Lynch about some of the current popular authors and whether he feels he helped pave the way for them. In the interview, he mentions Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and Twilight author Stephenie Meyer:

[...]
“Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people. … The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”

He goes on to explain a bit more about Stephenie Meyer. “People are attracted by the stories, by the pace and in the case of Stephenie Meyer, it’s very clear that she’s writing to a whole generation of girls and opening up kind of a safe joining of love and sex in those books. It’s exciting and it’s thrilling and it’s not particularly threatening because they’re not overtly sexual. A lot of the physical side of it is conveyed in things like the vampire will touch her forearm or run a hand over skin, and she just flushes all hot and cold. And for girls, that’s a shorthand for all the feelings that they’re not ready to deal with yet.”

What do you guys think?

OH MY GOOD LORD ROWLING NEEDS TO SHUT THAT OVER GAPING HOLE IN HIS FACE ANYONE WHO HATES ON STEPHENIE MEYERS & BAD MOUTHS HER MOST AMAZING BOOKS ON THE PLANET IS MY MORTAL ENEMY THAT WAS JUST PLAIN PETULANTLY RUDE OF ROWLING SOMEONE SHOULD KNOCK HIM OFF HIS HIGH HORSE HOW RUTHLESS AND SAD THAT YOU HAVE TO TRY TO FIND SOMTHING WRONG WITH THE MOST BRILLANT BOOKS EVER WRITTEN (IM PISSED)

by Amber in February 03 - 10:09 am

first of all…u need to calm down and actually understand what the article says! JK Rowling didn’t say any of that stuff…it was stephen king! so stop hating on Rowling! you don’t even knw whether rowling is a guy or a girl! what world are you living in??

n i actually agree with stephen king! Stephenie Meyer is not a very good writer, she’s said so herself in a couple of interviews…maybe she’ll get better with practice…

by nayy in February 03 - 10:13 am

For me Stephenie writes in a way that everyone can understand, wich for me it’s a great thing, since I was not a big fan of reading until Twilight. And I don’t think that she need put difficult words in the books to prove that she is extremely smart. I’m a big fan of Harry Potter too, but for me, Stephenie wrote a totally diffrent world in a totally diffrent way. It’s complete insane try to compare because there’s no comparation. Stephenie is amazing on what she writes and also Rowling… but for sure is COMPLETLY DIFFRENT! And that doesn’t mean that one is better than other… at all, just diffrent and amazing in their own way.
And my mommy have 45 years old and love the books, so I don’t think that the Twilight books are only for teenagers.

by Amna in February 03 - 10:20 am

i agree with nayy, i think they are both special in their own ways.

by hayley in February 03 - 10:23 am

Hahah, I agree with both Nayy and Amna.

by Ivana in February 03 - 10:34 am

It’s all about taste, but when it comes down to critics, you have to be honest-JK Rowling is a way more better writer than Stephenie.Twilight series may have an interesting plot, and the whole story developed but some parts of the books are very amateur stuff
For example,Breaking Dawn, the culmination, God knows should be forbidden. It was so tensed before the “great fight” and then- diplomacy?that’s not how it sells…

by Tami in February 03 - 10:37 am

I must say that I never put the twilight series down. And I got through on ly the frist 5 pages of the first harry potter book and have yet to pick it up again. (and i started that book 3 years ago)

by hayley in February 03 - 10:39 am

Breaking Dawn didn’t do the series justice for me.

by Michelsita in February 03 - 10:40 am

I’m amazed how rude and also passionate are Twilight fans, TNMEBDmelony17&lovless would you please read the interview again before writing those harsh words?

Everybody is entitled to have an opinion and I agree with Stephen King in that the quality of the writing of Meyer does not compare with Rowling. Meyer has a very simple way with words, that doesn’t means that the books she writes are bad literature at all, it’s entertaining and fun.

by TNMEBDmelony17&lovless in February 03 - 10:53 am

(……STILL PISSED OFF AND MAD AT STEPHINE KING so i wrote the wrong name sue me) but thanks for clearing that up for me  soooooooooo not a fan of harry potter though I PREFER VAMPIRES TO WIZARDS ANY DAY …..but i see were your coming from thank for the enlightenment AND STEPHENIE MEYER HAS FALSE MODESTY ISSUES SHES AMAZING AND I LOVE HER WORK ….STILL A LITTLE PISSED IM VERY TENACIOS pigheaded if you will kinda like R.H

by Juliee in February 03 - 10:56 am

how dares him?! i can’t believe it!
Stephen King is so wrong! i’m shocked! if steph’s writting was like that, she wouldn’t hace become that important. Her style is different from everyone else. she is unique. he is jelaous  there’s no other reason to talk about steph like that ¬¬ i’m really angry with him…
you can’t compare harry potter saga with twilight!! there’s no way! TWILIGHT IS THE BEST EVER!

I’m sorry my english is awfull…

by juancituu in February 03 - 11:04 am

i agree with juliee :P

by Ivana in February 03 - 11:05 am

I agree with Michelsita. What’s wrong with some of you fan freaks ?
Stephen King is not wrong. He is more capable of giving opinion on this kind of thing than any of us is.And why on earth would he be jealous?
Dont get the wrong impression- I like Twilight a lot,it’s amusing,it’s sweet and fun.
But be objective,please

by Lance Christopher in February 03 - 11:10 am

I’ve always said from the get go that Meyers writing is very dry yet captivating.

At times it’s hard to read (though an easy read at that) because of her style of writing yet the story she is telling pulls you in so you have no choice but to want to keep going.

by TNMEBDmelony17&lovless in February 03 - 11:11 am

SORRY ALL ……. SINCERILY  IM NOT that big of a HARRY POTTER FAN  TWILIGHT SAGAS MY LIFE …….AND IM A LITTLE OVER PROTECTIVE OF MY LIFE IF YOU CATCH MY DRIFT  I LOVE STEPHENIE AND ONLY WISH HER THE BEST SHES LIKE FAMILY OR SOMTHING stephenie meyers can’t write worth a darn THATS WAS WRONG thats like bad mouthing your sister or someone who has had a major impact on your life so maybe you can see why i took it personal or maybe not but never the less I LOVE STEPHENIE MEYER AND HER AMAZING BOOKS

by Juliee in February 03 - 11:18 am

he is jelaous because he had his time, he was famous once, but everything he writes it’s the same. i’ ve read the host, and i think is great! steph is not the best with a vocabulary really worked, or something like that, i agree about that, her way of saying things is simple, but it’s beautiful. with that she made me cry, laugh, get angry, etc. Twilight saga caughts you and you can’t stop reading, it’s really like a drug to us. so stephen you can go to your house and start thinkin in one story, only one i’m asking, one story wich can beat steph record, wich can caught us like that. do that and the i’m going to listen to everything you say about steph or rowling or who ever you like!

by TNMEBDmelony17&lovless in February 03 - 11:21 am

NAYY your right there both completley different and amazing r and so diffrent you can’t even clearly compare them YOU HIT IT RIGHT ON WITH THAT ONE . THANKS  I THINK IM GOOD NOW AND UNDERSTAND MORE CLEARLY THAT STEPHINE KING WASN’T JUST BAD MOUTHING THANK AGAIN NAYY

by Juliee in February 03 - 11:22 am

and yeah, we are passionated because twilight is a big part of our lives and it hurts when somebody who does NOT understand this feeling comes here to tell that stuff. we protect what is ours, and twilight its part of us

by TNMEBDmelony17&lovless in February 03 - 11:24 am

IVANA SORRRYYY IM SOOOOOO A FAN FREAK BUT IF YOU WOULD BE SO KIND I PREFER FANPIRE  heheheheheh LOVE MELONY

by TNMEBDmelony17&lovless in February 03 - 11:27 am

JULIEE I WITH YOU ALL THE WAY :!: A PART OF US AND WHO WE ARE

by Anya in February 03 - 11:29 am

Well I heard few years ago people complaining about JKR writing style, and that she is not a good writer and blablabla (HP was my biggest hype before Twilight) and be honest SK is in some way right, just go through 1book, and notice how many times she is still going on and on about how beautiful and breathtaking edward is, and there is much more.
And girls SK really doesn´t need to be jealous, he is one of the greates living writer if not the top, and as someone said, he knows better than we about writing.
SM use simple language and you can actually feel that the books were written by firstwriter, but I dont mean it badly. I love Twilght, there is just something about it, taht you cant stop and i don´t how you, but I´ve read loads and loads of books and I´ve never felt this way to any book!!!

by nayy in February 03 - 11:32 am

totally agree with you Juliee…

steph is not the best with a vocabulary really worked, or something like that, i agree about that, her way of saying things is simple, but it’s beautiful. with that she made me cry, laugh, get angry, etc.

and that is what really matters for me!!

we are passionated because twilight is a big part of our lives and it hurts when somebody who does NOT understand this feeling comes here to tell that stuff. we protect what is ours, and twilight its part of us

TNMEBDmelony17&lovless, for me Stephen King was very unfair with Meyer, I have to agree that J.K is also an amazing writer, but in my opinion Meyer is also an excelent and brillant writer and deserves to be recognized for her talent, right?

by Juliee in February 03 - 11:36 am

the matter here is not about if stephen is a great writter or if his sh***. we are saying that he can do whatever he wants, but saying “Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn” it’s a disrespect

by Ivana in February 03 - 11:36 am

Take some advice from Anya…she know whats she’s talking about lol
TNMEBDmelony17&lovless I prefer FANPIRE too and really, all of you can’t take it personally if someone says something bad about Twilight- it’s a free country right? And please, telling something like “Twilight is my life” sounds so desperate and the person behind those words cannot be taken serious at all
I AM a big fan of Twilight,a major one actually…but it will never out top HP series. But then again, that’s only MY choice is it?

So just enjoy the series and take the critics not so by heart lol

by Anya in February 03 - 11:43 am

My best advice is. DONT READ CRITICS I stopped to do that about the film, when everyone in my country (Czech Republic) was saying “oh this is gonna be another silly teen film, jack” So i didnt want to be angry everytime i read something like that, so i stopped to read critics opinion, especially from people who where in fact no critics(not this case) and i found out that this rule is good for everything what i like, i mean films, because if you like something, why to let it spoil it by someone else, i rather dont want to know, and will enjoy my own joy about it..

by TNMEBDmelony17&lovless in February 03 - 11:46 am

SWEE-EET FANPIRES MY FAV  SURE ,SURE DESPERATE ITS A FREE COUNTRY THOUGH RIGHT ? HP YOUR CHOICE AND THE TWILIGHT SAGAS MINE whats a better way to put it than the cleche its my lifes obsession SERIOUSLY snicker snicker ARN’Y YOU GLAD AMERICAS A FREE COUNTRY THOUGH RIGHT

by Mara in February 03 - 11:53 am

Everything Stephen King said is the complete truth. Anyone who knows anything about writing can agree that Meyer is terrible. The reason she sells so well is that teenage girls like to read about a perfect guy. JK Rowling is ten times the writer Meyer is, whether or not you like the Harry Potter series. Saying that Meyer is a good writer just makes you look more idiotic.

by Juliee in February 03 - 11:54 am

okok. it’s not my life. u’re right. but it’s important. i love those book and FOR ME is the most beautiful story i’ve ever read.
i used to love hp… i loved it, but twilight is now the best one for me. you may desagree. but sincerly, anya is totally right. stephen king or the pope himself (?) may talk about twilight, for good or not. but you’ll never feel what i felt, so i don’t care. WHAT WE FELT OR WE FEEL ABOUT TWILIGHT, NEW MOON, ECLIPSE, BREAKING DAWN AND MIDNIGHT SUN IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS. i am a fanpire and i think it will be like this for many years… i can’t say about the rest of my life, because i don’t know what is going to happen… but i’m sure that in these days twilight had caught my heart

by Juliee in February 03 - 11:59 am

yeah yeah sure mara

by S in February 03 - 12:10 pm

I say: Never let a writer analyze other writers’ writing.
If I put King’s and Meyer’s writing styles a side, I say King was very disrespectful saying that Meyer can’t write. Just because someone has writen many books and been popular many years, doesn’t say you are the only one good in writing.
I think Rowling is a good writer, but so is Meyer. And what King is saying is just nonsense.

by TNMEBDmelony17&lovless in February 03 - 12:17 pm

JULIEE YOUR FRICKEN AWESOME SWEEEEEE-EEET CHAT LATER GOTTA GO although TWILIGHT SAGA was ALWAYS my fav saga FOREVER & ALWAYS love melony

even being a bad writer and writing teenager stories (as you said mara) Stephanie Meyer broke your dear Rowling record, so if you think she’s a bad writer tell me how could she get that bestseller record, i’m a man, i don’t think i’m an idiot, and i like that story, so shut up please…

by kenji in February 03 - 12:59 pm

I have just recently joined the wonderful world of Twilight, as I finally found the time to begin reading. I am not one to read constantly or quickly but once I started these books every spare moment went to reading. Stephanie Meyer writes from Bella’s perspective in a way that makes you feel like they are your own thoughts. It is not complicated but it is real, and impossible to not find out what happens because rarley do we live out each day with the ergancy and passion Bella does. I’ve never read a SK book myself but I would rather put my energy into reading something that I can imagine feeling the same way than trying to follow an overly complicated web of pretencious vocabulary (if that is what he imagines good writing to be .. I don’t know) All I know is that it would not matter to me if SM got an A or a D- in literature because she wrote characters that I cared about. I will add quickly that being a “teenager” is irrelevant to the love of these book my friends and I are in our mid 20’s and love them. And as for Stephan’s poor insights into females and sexuality, my friends and are a not at all “threatened” nor are we “skanky” Stephanie writes beautifuly how sutble touches can be more intimate than overt and obvious comments and descriptions, for me this meant the story depicted, and allowed us, the reader to be a part of real and powerful, would be private moments. But hey, to each his own. I love the saga and Meyer’s writing. I only wish I had found time to read them sooner ( I’m in no hurry to find a SK book…)

by Sushi Roll in February 03 - 1:34 pm

I just think that it depends on the person. For example, many teenage girls can relate to the Twilight Saga because it’s something the can understand and know the rush of how love is. As to adults, they find the books horrible, cheesy and uninteresting. You can’t compare Jk Rowling and Meyers in the same categories because they’re both different types of books. Yes, they are fictional with the same type of fantasy world but they are both different types of writers. I really don’t think King is wrong to his opinion because everyone has their opinion but I just don’t think he should’ve said his opinion out there like that. When it comes down to it, it just really depend on the person and the type of books they like to read. There’s no wrong or shame to that.

by Anna in February 03 - 2:07 pm

Don’t take it personal, it’s his opinion. I like the Twilight saga but being objective I have to agree with King, JKR is way better writer than SM, to me SM writing feels like any fanfiction you can find on the internet (and sometimes I’ve found better fanfictions) I’m in no way trying to make you hate her nor do I hate her just saying that she can get better because certaintly it’s not the greatest writing. Her characters are not very well defined and her plots (especially in BD) were sometimes off and convenient.

by Kaye in February 03 - 2:22 pm

okay.. that article really pissed me off. okay Stephen king maybe a famous author and so does JRowling , but they do not have the DAMN right to judge stephenie. they’re just jealous since stephenie has the spotlight on her right now.they dont know what it feels like to read the book and be a teenager once more at the same time.

by Diana in February 03 - 4:08 pm

Is this guy kidding??
He must be confusing the names.
Half the reason I love Twilight so much is cause of the way it’s WRITTEN!
The reason it took me 2 and a half years to read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was because of the way it was written! BORING!
If Stepehenie Meyer wrote Harry Potter, it would be a lot more interesting.

by cristina in February 03 - 4:37 pm

I don’t agree with this guy at all! we like the books because Stephanie’s writing is amazing she knows how to get the point across without jabbereing on for a chapter. She can describe stuff so well that you can picture everything in your head! She is just an amazing writer ….PERIOD!!!

by Lance Christopher in February 03 - 4:41 pm

Let me first say that I didn’t read every single comment above but I can agree.

It’s one opinion from a writers stance but at the end of the day what matters more. What fellow writers want? Or what the audience thinks?

It’s the audience/readers who pay the money and buy the book. It’s them who enjoys the stories and keeps going back for more.

He’s completely entitled to his own opinion. No two people are alike in their beliefs or opinions and we are all certainly entitled to our own.

Let the man be.

by Sarahh. :) in February 03 - 5:22 pm

personally, i think everyone is entitled to there own opinions…
but i do not agree with Stephen King.
it takes a lot for me to like a book, and i havent quite liked the books he wrote(at least the ones that i have read), but he is a good writer.
J.K. Rowling is also a good writer, im not a fan of harry potter at all, but she writes well.
I think Stephenie is a pretty amazing writer if i do say so myself, but thats just my opnion. but i sorta think Stephen King is crazy…
come on, have you read his books?

by Ashley in February 03 - 6:26 pm

i laughed when i read this..stephen king can say whatever he wants. he has published so many books and most of them have been made into movies and he’s well known. i personally love his books. j.k. rowling is a great author as is s. meyer, i mean she just got thrown into the writing and movie business i figure one should at least give her some time to grow instead of throwing a horror book at her.

PS – loved eye of the dragon, deathly hallows and eclipse.

by em. in February 03 - 6:28 pm

shut up stephen king. youre a fag.

by kerri in February 03 - 6:38 pm

wow, has he got it wrong. Im 32 years old and the whole thing about twilight is that edwards cersion of intimact is so sexual it’s heart pounding. Thats what makes it hot for us females. Not all of us have to jump in the sack, get it over with, and bam…their done. No, i perfer edwards intimacy…and stephen king, im a mom of three boys, so im plenty practiced in the sexual stuff.

by katie in February 03 - 6:38 pm

agree with mara

by Sue in February 03 - 8:30 pm

I love the twilight story. I think Meyer’s has come up with a great story, but could of used some help whilst actually writing the books.

My favourite of the books is the draft of Midnight Sun, its like she’s found her pace and its very well written.

by kiki in February 03 - 9:10 pm

I think it’s more like, the level of writing is on an entirely different level. Meyer’s writing is very simple that anyone can read it and comprehend very easily. It’s not to say that she is a bad writer, just not as a high level writer as JKR or SK. Also, Meyer had a great story to write about so that is also definitely a factor in her huge success.

by Candice in February 03 - 9:20 pm

I think stephanie meyer is absolutely talented and amazing and so is stephen king and j.k rowling, you guys can’t believe all that nonsense it’s just press and so what even if they do think that everyone has an opinion and they all stink but stephanie is amazing and yes not only teenagers are obsessed with this stuff i am 24 and i am my mother is 51 and is as well i’m sorry but if she wasn’t we wouldn’t have mega twilight fans craving for more even after breaking dawn i am ready for midnight sun too, bring it on steph. we love ya:)

by Candice in February 03 - 9:37 pm

honestly if anyone who comes here is obviously a twilight fan or just argumentative and posers so if you don’t like the twilight series then move on i am for a fact a fanpire i love the series it’s amazing:0)

by Jackie in February 03 - 10:04 pm

Stephen King: ~350 million books sold.
J.K. Rowling: ~400 million books sold.
Stephenie Meyer: ~40 million books sold.

Personal opinion on writing quality is fine, and no one should question that Meyer’s books are effective. However, try doing some research before you rant about how Meyer’s books are so much better than Rowling’s or King’s because they’re more popular. They’re not.

by Molly. in February 03 - 10:28 pm

Can’t Stephen King have his opinion? You guys talk about how unfair it is to talk about Stephenie Meyer this way, yet you’re being hypocrites by attacking Stephen King. Stephen King has been writing for 40+ years, and his first novel [not short story] was published in 1974. He has experience on his hands, and he’s an incredible writer, yet he has the maturity and common sense to know that not everyone will love his books, just like not everyone loves the Twilight series. People saying on here he’s a bad author just because he badmouths Twilight really don’t realize that he’s heard so much harsher criticism from that on his own writing, and he honestly doesn’t care. Twilight is good for the age group that it’s aimed at, just like Stephen King’s books are not necessarily written for young adults. And in all honesty, Stephen King and Stephenie Meyer shouldn’t even be compared. For 1, the Twilight series has sold 40 million books, give or take, whereas Stephen King’s have sold more than 350 million, and he’s STILL writing, and they’re STILL putting movies out there that are based on his books. And number 2, Stephenie Meyer and Stephen King write such different novels that they shouldn’t even be compared.

And he didn’t say he was better than her at all. He gave an honest opinion, which, last time I checked, he still has the right of free speech.

by Nysaa in February 03 - 11:01 pm

So i’m agreeing with all the people that said

“Steph and J.K.R have different styles of writing and are special in their own way. and that Steph wrote in a more simpler language but yet great work.”

But i think King has a point as well. But to me it doesn’t really matter. they are both great writers and I love both the HP series and the Twilight series. But I have to admit at least Rowling ended the books in style. Breaking Dawn…just didn’t do any of the books justice. I was just waiting for the big “break” to happen and it never came. nevertheless, the books are great.

by Anya in February 04 - 12:14 am

I agree that SK has all the right to say his opinion and everything (I said more above) but just compare how much books they sold is really irelevant, maybe JKR and SM, cause JKR started to write in 1997 (or were published the 1. one) SM published T 2005 (I think) and as someone said SK published in 1974!!!! so try to compare how much books did they sold is not right, cause as you can see, they are a little bit of ahead of SM. You can be suprise but in some countries where is loads of Twilight fans books didnt even come out. Maybe one day if SM will continue write so in some 30 years, she will have written as many books as SK, then maybe she will sell 400 mil. book either…

by Amber in February 04 - 12:26 am

Hmm…lets put it this way. as far as good writers go.. JK Rowlings books are read by, and understood by elementary school children. enough said. I think its absolutely hysterical to assume that all fans of Twilight are teenagers. I’m 24. my dad is 60 and loves them! Personally I just think its in bad taste for King to dis another fellow writer. It makes him look… cheap. Which is basically what his writing has come down to. they go straight to tv movies. Stephenie has created a marvalous, original and captivating series. Obviously if she wasnt “worth a darn” then her books wouldnt have sold millions of copies. IF the writer is good, then their books are good.
Stop trying to be “fair” to King… and tell the truth. He bottom line should not have said that. If anything he should have said he wasnt a fan of Twilight. that would have been fair.

by Matty in February 04 - 12:36 am

Stephanie Meyer is a bad writer and you should feel bad if you like her bad writing.

by Jackie in February 04 - 1:32 am

What King was saying was that she is a bad writer. Bad writer does not necessarily mean bad story. Obviously Meyer’s story is a good one considering the level of appeal it has – and it seems King acknowledges that. There’s plenty of bad writing that sells well because despite the bad writing, the story is appealing (Da Vinci Code, I’m looking at you!).

by Anya in February 04 - 1:57 am

Matty: I dont think that she is the best and blabla, I think that I can be quite objective, and i realize that she is not the best, but it could be hundred times worse. But i dont understand why i should feel bad that i like her books, or is it just about her style of writing? cause i can easily close my eyes about it, and rather enjoy the storyline… even that i cant stand the ending of 3 book..

by Kayla in February 04 - 6:34 am

For those of you calling yourselves “fanpires”… Stephen King wrote a vampire book.

by gsdrg in February 04 - 8:04 am

Stephen King must be jealous for having sold almost ten times as many books as Stepgany Meyer. Rowling too, who sold more than ten times as many

THEY ARE JEALUS

by Lizzie in February 04 - 9:13 am

Omg, S. King! If you hate Twilight so much I’d like to see YOU write a bestseller beloved by millions and get movie contracts and a career that spans decades–oh wow, my bad. Carry on.

by Milo in February 04 - 10:17 am

The Dark Tower > Twilight.

‘Nuff said.

by Nyxx in February 04 - 10:36 am

Oh gracious, I’m so amused by some of the hardcore Twilight fans on here. Having read both, I can honestly say that Rowling is not only a better writer technically, but also spins a more complex and meaningful, plot driven tale. She also, pardon me, thoroughly researches her given subjects and doesn’t just make up whatever she feels like with the mythology she has chosen to include in her novels. Can’t really argue that last point, Mrs. Meyer has said herself that she did not research vampires prior to writing her books. Just putting that out there. Alright, fen, come get me!!!

by Lance Christopher in February 04 - 10:56 am

While I agree completely with Nyxx I will argue that there almost wasn’t any need for Meyer to research vampires.

Point being she is setting her story in modern day america, and claims that all of the mythology and tales surrounding vampires are loosely based on reality, to which she does create pretty believable (fictionally speaking, of course) creatures, if you will.

Rowling did an excellent job on her research because that’s what she sought out to do. I’m sure if Meyer’s was given the task or had the intentions her books would’ve come out pretty good as well.

I will say though that come Eclipse and Breaking Dawn she was taking it a bit far in terms of believability. Cars and homes one thing… but– an island?? Not with THIS economy

I even feel that introducing werewolves into the story was pushing it.

But, back to topic I still feel that Meyer created what she wanted to. She reached her target audience and she wrote to their standards and means. Not that us older folk couldn’t enjoy the tales as well.

i LOVE Twilight and i think the guy was jst a bit jealous. i think that the scenes with the touching and more were really cute!! i think Edward and Bella r cute full stop!! im such a fan of Harry Potter bt now its like Twilight all the way!!! ive read all the books twice. as soon as i was finished the last one i began the first again!!thats how much i love it!! i agree with Juliee that because twilight is a big part of our lives, it hurts when somebody who does NOT understand this feeling comes here to tell that stuff. we protect what is ours, and twilight its part of us. and its almost as if people are insulting us for saying crap things about the books.

by Orrie in February 04 - 12:22 pm

Who cares…? I mean if you like the book then it shouldn’t matter what anyone else says, right? Besides writers are always critiquing one another’s material anyways. It’s not like he said “She sucks at life!!! And her writing is that of a psycho person on every drug known to man… and then some!!!” Just relax people! Besides we all know that there were tones of grammatical errors in her books, but we all looked past that and took in the story for what it was! Now let’s all just sit back, relax and enjoy the fruits of other people’s labors and stop fussing over what ONE writer said.

Peace!

by Ann in February 04 - 12:28 pm

i think stephen king really sucks. seriously, i hate his books
he should learn a little with stephenie!!

by Beean in February 04 - 12:35 pm

who cares? still love twilight and thats it. it just doesnt matter

by Anna in February 04 - 1:11 pm

I see that some of you aren’t familiar with literary criticism. Here’s a shocking revelation: not everyone likes the same literature, and Stephen King has every right to criticise her. I do love how you think Stephen King of all people is jealous of Stephenie Meyer.

by Anon in February 04 - 2:40 pm

@Ann: The only thing Mister King could learn from Smeyer is how to be a mediocre writer.

by Amused College Girl in February 04 - 5:04 pm

Dear young and impressionable, screaming teenage fans.

Someday you’ll grow up and read some classic literature. I hope that when you do, you remember how you railed against a respected author’s opinion as being words of heresy and chuckle a little.

Remember folks, there’s a big wide literary world out there to explore! The road to reading does not end at Twilight.

by Jayce in February 04 - 5:10 pm

There’s a very find distinction between good and enjoyable, but it seems to be missed by most people.

Meyer *IS* a technically inferior writer. Note I said *technically.* This has nothing to do with how enjoyable what she writers is, or whether or not people should like it. It’s a comment on her prose style, her sometimes stunted word flow, her often purple and over-the-top prose. It’s a comment on the lack of intricacy of her foreshadowing or the sometimes heavy-handedness of her characterization. It’s not about liking and not liking. It’s not about what gets you hot and bothered. Liking a book doesn’t mean it’s well-written, and being poorly-written doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable or that you can’t identify with it.

by Scribe_Gossett in February 04 - 9:43 pm

A small note to screaming fans of Twilight. I must agree with Amused College Girl: one day, you’ll grow up and remember just how self-centered and over emotional you were as a teenager, and sigh. Hopefully, someday, your days of screaming all caps rants will be behind you. Until then, I suggest a much better vampire book entitled Sunshine by Robin McKinley.

P.S. Do try to take some English classes before college, children. Your grammar is horrifying.

by Anya in February 04 - 11:55 pm

Scribe_Gossett: our grammar is maybe not so perfect, because loads of us, is not american or british you know, I´m from czech republic. But I do agree that classic L. is classic (not just jane austen) one of my favourite book is Evgen Onegin, but you probably have to read more books with old date to recognize what is well written literature.

by Chinese Girl in February 05 - 5:01 am

You people, yes all you twihards, need to get a life. I totally agree with Amused College Girl. You cannot limit your knowledge of “literature” – if one can even call Twilight that- to just one book. There are millions of books out there, and yes as shocking as it may seem, there are books better than Twilight.

It’s not SMeyer’s fault that she’s an amateur writer who produces mediocre works. It is however her fault for not getting a decent enough editor – just to appease those of us who have read better pieces of literature.

And before any of you react violently, I have read them, and I want to bang my head on the wall for wasting precious money on them.

by Leah Cullen in February 05 - 7:06 am

People just ignore what they say about “Twilight” and our lovely Stephenie Meyer… We know how good Stephenie is, we know how great, magnifique, amazing, marvoleous,… the saga is !!! SK is just jealous, or he’s just saying his opinion… and don’t forget, HE IS A MAN… so they do not understand our feelings about Steph and her books !!!
TWILIGHT FOREVER !!! STEPHENIE ROCKS !!!
I DON’T CARE WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT IT !!!

The ” Twilight” saga is the best saga I’ve ever read and will read in my life !!!!!!!!!!!

by Ashley in February 05 - 7:38 am

Well, I guess taste is a matter of opinion, really. It’s your opinion if you love Twilight, if you can’t stop reading it, if you think Edward is the best thing since Swiss cheese.

Okay, fine.

But Stephen King is more than entitled to his opinion, as a writer. Firstly, I actually agree that J.K. Rowling is a better writer, in the sense that her plots are more well-planned and make more sense, her language is superior, and her character development (which actually is very painful sometimes) is more believable.

And Stephen King himself is a seminal writer, his books have even made their way into literary analytical texts. In terms of thematic concerns (oh my! New phrase, kiddies!), there is no way anyone could argue that Meyer trumps King.

I mean, if you like Twilight, you like it. So what? There isn’t one person in this world whose interests are made of totally awesome things (and that in itself is relative.) But there’s no need to make irrational statements just because Stephen King isn’t drooling over Edward.

But hey, just saying. Take it easy, guys.

by Kilo in February 05 - 1:15 pm

Dear God, people, learn some grammar. You read books! You should know better!

by Anae in February 05 - 5:33 pm

Ok… ok, our point of view is diferent….

but I guess… she maybe …(maybe please XD), she does not understand us, because she’s no longer a teenager and we yes  … I think Harry Potter is like awesome and some true (sometimes, Twilight  is awesome but with true feelings that we (teenagers) need to know… like “why is this?

and the most important…. what the fu** … stephenie meyer is amazing because she caught our attention, and that’s cool

xoxo- ;D

by Samantha in February 05 - 7:39 pm

Haha Kilo, that’s really funny! And this topic got a hell of a lot of comments. I looked at it and was like, “Holy Crap! Eighty-something comments!!”

Now…I’m a huge Twihard and never really got the chance to get into Harry Potter. Both stories/plot lines are fantastic and incredibly facsinating, but they each have their own styles (like many others have said).

I have never read any Stephen King novels, but from what I hear he is a great writer who is very respected.

I’m not going to slam Steve, but I was flat out shocked when i read what he said. Steph Meyer may not have a Ph.D in English Lit., but the stories that she comes up with captivate the heart.

You can’t compare other writers when it comes to their styles and the types of stories they tell.

LONG LIVE TWILIGHT….and Harry Potter……………
and I guess Stephen King’s novels can live long too….

by Jeneric in February 05 - 8:46 pm

Okay, I was directed here from a friends blog and I am completely shocked.

Why is it that people cannot take critisism?
I will admit, SK could have worded it better, he could have been more specific, or clearer about what he was implying.

Meyer is a wonderful story teller. She managed to captivate the hearts of a lot of people. And “a lot” is almost an understatement. The problem is, the format of her words, how she describes things, her flow between one moment to the next, how long she dwells on things… they are laking in expertise. So, she needs a little fine tuning. ALL writers experience this. It take experience and extensive practicing.

Most authors do not break into the world of writing with a story plot great enough to lift them to such fame. She was fortunate to have such a story as Twilight. And, I will admit, it is a darn good story.

I just can’t believe the fans went crazy over this. It is simply, a VERY experienced writer commenting on a fellow writer. He didn’t imply her story was bad… just her writing. And it would seem we may not know EXACTLY what about her writing he didn’t like. Unless, he says it at a later period.

People just need learn to look deeper into situations and not be so quick to the draw.

by Washington State Reader in February 05 - 10:45 pm

SM may not have needed to research vampires, but she could have at least research Forks and Washington State before she wrote her books. Seriously, if Port Townsend is a bad area, then Seattle must be L.A (which, thankfully, it’s not). I pray that those of you who really think it rains all time in Forks or in Washington look up some basic facts! Although her lack of research may have provided a bit of inspiration for next years NANOWRIMO.

And Stephen King is spot on when he says she can’t write well but she can still tell a story that is engaging and appealing to a wide variety of people. Compared to Stephen King, SM is also a very new writer and as such she doesn’t have the experience he does when it comes to writing. I’m assuming you all have had an English class where you had to write a story. I’m also assuming that it got critiqued by your teacher (or professor) as well as your classmates. Essentially, Stephen King is doing the same thing. He never said that SM can’t improve her writing skills, he simply said that at this point in her career she’s a bad writer.

And to those of you who say that SM is read by everyone while HP is only read by children haven’t paid that much attention to HP fandom or the phenomena itself. HP is read by children and adults and is now considered to be a standard text for college Children’s Lit courses. Twilight may one day reach that level, but at this point it’s nowhere near there. Be patient!

by Janay in February 07 - 12:09 am

He is right people have been comparing her to the great J.K. Rowling you just dont compare a complex writer with a simple writer like stephanie

by Vanessa in February 10 - 5:10 pm

How dare Stephen King say that about SM, sure her writing isn’t some classic literature…it’s suppose to appeal to young adults so why would it be filled with big words? She gets to the point and doesn’t feel the need to over dramatize EVERY word  As for comparing Twilight and Harry Potter they’re are very much different books and different authors, so obviously they have different styles!! SK is a weirdo anyway, i’d rather read sparkly vamps than the crap he writes about (perverted clowns?! lol)

by Rachel in February 10 - 5:23 pm

Who cares what SK has to say?! SM never stated she was the “worlds best author” so what’s he got shoved up his ass? SM never intended for Twilight to get published so it was just a hobby for her (and an excellent hobby it was) and i think it was brave of her to publish it and to stick at it and write three follow up books for her fans :) SK is just a miserable old man who doesn’t understand what today’s young teens want!!!

by azhi in February 17 - 8:56 pm

After reading some of these comments, I weep for our youth. WE ARE DOOMED.

DOOOMED.

Please, for the sake and love of all things holy, stop reading Twilight and pick up some literature that is actually, you know, literature. You might learn something! Maybe even a few ‘big words’.

Jesus christ.

by thisissilly in February 22 - 6:55 am

you cannot compare JK to SM. if someone says JK is better, thats there opinion, if someone says SM is better, thats also there opinion. i love both HP and the twilight saga. i find it easier to read SM book’s and i found them more breathtaking, yes, because im a teenage girl. my brother who is 21 loves harry potter and was outstounded by them as was i. they are just writters who want to write different types of genre’s of books. keep your opinion to yourselfes if it’s bad. it’s really just silly.

by Charon in February 23 - 2:38 am

It continually baffles me when I read these comments boosting the Twilight series due to its ‘recurring theme’ of ‘mature, true love’. Having given the work a cursory glance (hey, you can’t rail against something unless you’ve read it, right?), I genuinely have to wonder how many grown adults (and I’m excluding the teenage audience here, since a combination of hormones and lack of experience tends to breed a skewed viewpoint) think that the relationship between Bella and Edward is in any way healthy. Between his obsessive stalking habits and her infatuation-blinded hero worship, it seems glaringly obvious that the parallels to any number of abusive relationships are more than apt. It’s deeply worrisome to see young people adopt that sort of mindset as the ‘right way’, but more than that, it raises some truly uncomfortable questions as to the personal lives of the adult fans of the series.

To stay in tune with the article, though, it’s ludicrous to assume that King – or any professional writer – would keep his/her thoughts on Meyers – or, again, any other writer – purely positive out of some invisible ‘bond of brotherhood’ between writers. The man doesn’t like her work. A lot of people don’t. If you enjoy it, well, fine, that’s your call to make, but never assume that sharing a field of employment with another person means you automatically agree with, respect or even acknowledge that self-same person as an equal. Meyers has obviously struck gold with her writing style (a concept I won’t even begin to share my thoughts on), and to her, I say, “Bravo”. You’ve managed to smear the dust off of an old saw and sell it anew, thanks to a combination of generational gap and pandering to the base. That takes no small amount of effort. Here’s hoping she takes the advice of writers like King and brushes up on her basics a bit, though; it would be a teary-eyed shame if the Twilight fans of today were unable to enjoy the books in a decade or so, when the work is beginning to show its age.

by mike in May 06 - 9:26 pm

Go stephen king. After attempting to read twilight I proceeded to light a match and light the book on fire (yes i actually did this). The series is a blight upon literature, to call it such even is an insult to people who love real writers.

by Ashley in December 04 - 11:37 am

Personally? I love Twilight. I started reading then when they first came out, and couldn’t put them down. I also “like” Stephen King. His books are a bit to drawn out for me, but I think their amazingly written.. True, Stephenie Meyer’s writing in her books could have been A LOT better. But it’s also her first book and hopefully they will get better through time. But Twilight fans who instantly bash someone for saying something even remotely bad about Twilight gives Twilight a bad reputation. You have to find a way to except that Stephenie Meyer isn’t this AMAZING writer. She’s a human being who makes mistakes. I love Steph, and hope to one day meet her, but then I’m not going to go on the defensive if someone says something bad about the movie or books. You just have to learn to take criticism. If you like the movie/books (which I personally hated the move Twilight, but love New Moon, much better director), then great! That’s amazing! But others may not like it and they are also entitled to their opinion.
