It is the kind of build up you can’t market or manufacture. Ironically, The Blind Side starring Sandra Bullock seemed destined to be trounced by the latest in the Twilight series, New Moon. But after holding tough on the first weekend, The Blind Side pulled close to even with Twilight in its second week out and now has taken a clear lead in its third week coming in at $6.8 million on Friday over Twilight’s $5.2 million gross.

It is a rare accomplishment. The Blind Side is entirely story driven and has gone from second place in the box office sweepstakes to number one in its third week, beating out two big budget blockbusters in the process (New Moon and 2012). It is true that Blind Side benefited from weak new entries on week two …

After Warner Bros.’ football drama “The Blind Side” squeezed a few more bodies into the multiplex on Thanksgiving than “New Moon,” the vampire sequel took the top spot back on Friday with $17.9 million at 4,042 theaters.

While that figure reps a 75% decline for “New Moon” from its first Friday, such steep drops aren’t uncommon for a record tentpole opener, i.e. “The Dark Knight” fell 67%; “Spider-Man 3,” -71%; and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” -70%. …

“The Twilight Saga: New Moon” has been exploding all sorts of box office records — my colleague, Ben Fritz, says, for example, that it is the least expensive movie ever to open to more than $200 million worldwide. But the most important record that it’s on track to break is one that might give a serious new shot in the arm to everyone in the indie film world.

When you factor in the original film’s $383.8 million in worldwide grosses with the $700 million or more in worldwide grosses that “New Moon” could eventually roll up, Summit Entertainment will soon find itself having the biggest true independent film franchise in recent history. (By true independent, I’m disqualifying New Line, which made even more money with its “Lord of the Rings” franchise but wasn’t a true independent since it was already owned by Time-Warner by the time the “LOTR” series was launched.) …

Summit Entertainment’s ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon‘ brought in boatloads of cash this past weekend. Even more than expected. Who knows what will happen this Thanksgiving weekend, when kids will be out of school for four days straight.

The original box office reports for the weekend indicated that ‘New Moon‘ brought in $140.7 million domestically and $118.1 million overseas, but now those numbers have been updated.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the new global total for ‘New Moon’s’ opening weekend is a whopping $274.9 million, split between the domestic take, now at $142.7 million, and international at $142.8 million. Evidently some of the global box office figures came in slower because of the variety of distributors handling the film.

The Friday haul for the “Twilight” sequel includes a record $26.3 million from midnight screenings alone.

If “New Moon” maintains its pace, it might have a shot at the all-time best opening weekend record of $158.4 million, also held by “The Dark Knight.”

“The Twilight Saga: New Moon” sold a mind-boggling $80 million worth of tickets on Friday, according to preliminary estimates. That way surpasses the one-day record of $67 million set by “The Dark Knight” last year. Summit’s vampire sequel is now aiming to topple the three-day opening weekend record of $158M set by TDK. It was a female-driven Friday at the box office, with Warners’ sports dramedy “The Blind Side” reportedly grossing around $11.8 million and headed for a projected weekend take of as high as $35 million. Star Sandra Bullock’s all-time best opening is “The Proposal,” which bowed to $33.6M back in January. Looks like Hollywood may have a new box-office queen before the weekend is over.
