Before Nikki Reed landed the role of Rosalie Hale in “The Twilight Saga,” the actress had a major advantage over her competition – “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke dated her father.

“I have a long history with Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the first film,” Nikki told Billy Bush on Monday during an interview for Access Hollywood and “The Billy Bush Show.” “I didn’t actually audition, but I did meet with everybody involved. I knew about the project long before everybody else… I got a phone call like I think eight or nine months before we started shooting about ‘Twilight,’ this little tiny book that a select audience enjoyed. She’s the recent recipient of the Dorothy Arzner Directors Award at the Women in Film Crystal Lucy Awards. She’s been said to have “prove[n] that woman can muscle in on the blockbuster market too.” She’s been slated to direct films like Hamlet, If I Stay, The Girl with the Red Riding Hood, and Maximum Ride. Her name is Catherine Hardwicke, and she was the director of Twilight.

Her work on Twilight has, according to Reuters, gained her and the film a place in the Guiness Book of World Records for “Highest-Grossing Movie By A Female Director.”

Q: “Twilight” cost $37 million and made nearly $382 million worldwide. Do you feel pressure to top yourself?

A: “I don’t think that’s possible, and I don’t think that’s a healthy way to think. “Twilight” was a phenomenon — the stars just aligned on that film. Thank God (director) Ridley Scott didn’t stop after “Blade Runner.” He made “Thelma and Louise” and “Gladiator” and a million other interesting movies. I still want to make other good films that won’t lose money.”

 In the time since it was first revealed by MTV last year, it has gone on to become one of the most famous lines in the world.“You’d better hold on tight, spider monkey.”And while an actual isn’t nearly as cute as Kristen Stewart, the phrase has taken on a life of its own, inspiring MySpace pages T-shirts, and dozens of other fan tributes. Now, “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke is cluing fans in on the eight other lines that nearly became Robert Pattinson dialogue in that “spider monkey” scene.

“I gave it to Rob, the whole list,” she explained. “And I said, ‘Rob, which one do you want to say?’ And he goes, ‘I want to say the spider-monkey one.’ ”

Option 1:
Edward: You’re not scared of heights, are you?
Bella: Not that I know of …

Option 2:
Edward: Hold on tight …
Bella: Don’t worry …

Option 3:
Edward: Wrap your legs around me like a spider monkey.
Bella: Done.

Reading over her unchosen chunks of dialogue, Hardwicke told us that she was glad Rob picked the now-immortal “spider monkey” line. “It’s a fun line,” she grinned. “Thank god he picked that one.”

We talked about the first “chemistry screen test” between Kristen and Rob. Kristen had to act out a scene with five different potential Edwards, one after another, with Catherine deciding that Robert was “the one” the first time the two kissed — which, as all Twilighters know, happened in Catherine’s bedroom.

That all led up to the scene that is now a favourite to win Best Kiss at this Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards. Apparently, both actors were nervous — so nervous that Rob actually fell off the bed during the audition. But then, once he was in the rhythm of things, Catherine actually had to remind Robert that the film was PG-13 as he was getting a little too … well, you can use your imagination.

Stephanie: Since the movie was based on her extremely successful literary work – did you ever feel the urgent need to consult Stephenie for direction on any particular scene or the movie as a whole?

CH: Stephenie was involved as much as she could be — (she gave us script notes, visited the set several times, did a cameo, and gave us notes on the cut) — though she did write and promote two other books during the time we were making Twilight! She is unbelievable — too bad she’s not running the government, huh?

Salomé: I would like to know… if you were a character of the movie/saga, who would you be?

CH: I’d want to be Bella!
