Chicago woman facing prison time for videotaping three minutes of “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” has a new ally in her legal battle — the film’s director.

Veteran director Chris Weitz told the Sun-Times he’s dismayed about Samantha Tumpach’s arrest Nov. 28 at a Rosemont movie theater on a felony charge of illegally copying his new hit film, and he’s contacted the film’s studio about his concerns.

It isn’t just screaming tween girls who are going gaga over New Moon star Taylor Lautner – one of the onscreen werewolf’s biggest fans is Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx.

That’s what Lautner found out to his great surprise at the Twilight premiere a year ago.

“There’s tons of fans and we hear all of these high pitch voices and we hear ‘Rah, rah, Taylor, Taylor!’” Lautner, 17, tells George Lopez on the Thursday airing of Lopez Tonight. “All of a sudden I hear this deep voice behind me: ‘Taylor, Taylor!’ …. And this guy walks up to me and he goes ‘Hey … my daughter is a huge fan, and I’m a huge fan is there any way I can get a picture with you. I’m Jamie Foxx.’ I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? Can I get a picture with you?’”

Critics certainly reacted strongly — and often negatively — to “New Moon,” but moviegoers came out in droves, and after the mega blockbuster “The Dark Knight” failed to nab a Best Picture nod in 2008, the Academy might be looking to make a change. Or not. The idea of vampires joining the likes of Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman in “Invictus“) seems a bit of a stretch. Yet the Twilighters MTV News spoke to at a recent fan event in Times Square were certain “New Moon” deserved some Oscar love.

“They always give the [nominations] to the boring movies,” said Vanesa Reyes, who said she and her friends planned to see the movie four or five times over its first weekend. “Let’s give young people a chance to win some Oscars. It’s time for a change.” …

“New Moon” director Chris Weitz seems pretty pleased with the way he ended the second movie in the “Twilight Saga.” But the fans who have already gotten a chance to see the movie are still reeling from Weitz’s directorial decision. Not to give too much away, but some said it wasn’t the conclusion they’d expected.

Some traveled from as far away as Canada, Minnesota and Florida to catch a glimpse of the New Moon stars. “I don’t think most people will get to experience something quite like this,” said Pattinson, who was flanked by bodyguards. Stewart also had heavy security on the carpet. “This is what you work for,” she said, looking at the crowd. “The only reason we make movies is because we care about people.” Said Facinelli: “We’re just blessed to have a really strong fan base. I’m a fan of the books, so I know where it comes from.” Fanning knew what to expect: “I’ve never been a part of something this big before. I heard what it was like last time, so I was prepared.”

Best fan signs: “Team whatever I can get,” “Team Ed-cob. Why not have both?” “Team Jacob, cuz real men don’t sparkle,” “Jasper: I’d cut myself in front of you any day.” And yes, there were even naughtier signs.

Sound man: “I learned my lesson from the first premiere,” said Lutz, who then admitted, “I have earplugs, but I left them at home. They were bright orange.” As for his character, “Emmett is so happy-go-lucky. But when stuff hits the fan, he steps in and takes care of business.”
